Travel and Transport
Vienna is very well connected: it has an international airport, "Wien Schwechat", located 11 km from the city centre, with frequent flights to many European airports operated by major flight companies, including discount airlines. The major railway station is located near the city centre, which can be reached by metro line U1.
By train
Allmost all international trains to Vienna arrive at 'Wien Hauptbahnhof'. If you are coming from the airport, you'll probably arrive at 'Wien Mitte'. From there you can take a taxi or use public transportation as follows:
- Wien Hauptbahnhof: Take metro line U1 (red) direction 'Leopoldau' to station 'Karlsplatz'. When you exit the train follow the signs for 'Karlsplatz', go up the steps and turn left and follow the signs for 'Oper'. After about 50m there is a McDonalds and an escalator signed 'Elisabethstraße'.
- Wien Mitte: Take metro line U4 (green) direction 'Hütteldorf' to station 'Karlsplatz'. When you exit the train direction of travel, go up the steps and turn left and follow the signs for Oper. After about 50m there is a McDonalds and an escalator signed 'Elisabethstraße'.
Take the escalator signed 'Elisabethstraße'. On reaching street level you are already very near to Palais Eschenbach or to the recommended hotel (see map below).
By plane
All flights to Vienna arrive at airport 'Wien-Schwechat'. From there you can take
- a taxi (20 km),
- a shuttle bus, or
- one of these train lines:
- City Airport Train (CAT) ends at "Wien Mitte" (16 min), from where you can use public transport as described above.
- Schnellbahn S7. Get out at "Wien Mitte" (8 stops, 25 min), from where you can use public transport as described above.

By car
If you plan to go to Vienna by car, plan carefully.
Parking space in Vienna is very rare and expensive. In particular, check if your hotel has a parking garage.
